Check out the Franconia Kristallweizen and Pedernales Lobo Negro layered beer combination in the first picture. It has one of the best examples of layer separation I remember getting in the long time. Can a spoon do this?? Here is a closeup of the great layer separation seen in the Franconia/Lobo Negro combo.

The classic layered beer drink has a dark beer (most often Guinness) layered on top of a lighter colored beer. This combination gives a dramatic effect but it isn't the only possible layering combination. As can be seen in the pictures below, having a dark beer as the bottom layer can also work nicely. Keep on experimenting!! Check out the Instructions page for help in making different combinations.
Received these great layered beer pictures from John in St Louis MO. He used bottled Guinness over Schlafly Hefeweizen from the Saint Louis Brewery. Great layer separation! The second picture shows Guinness Draught over Strongbow cider. If you have any nice pictures, please send them to support@theperfectblackandtan.com.
Back in January 2014 we had a blog post about an interesting black and tan video demonstration at the doingsciencetostuff blog. The video really showed the principle of density-based layering at work. See blog link here. Well, I just stumbled across another beer layering video they did a few months later using three beers in a wave tank. Check it out! You can find their full blog post here: doingsciencetostuff
I picked up some seasonal Franconia Maibock a few days ago (Hadn't seen it before...) and tried it with my last bottle of Nitro Milk Stout from Left Hand Brewing Co. My previous layering experiements with the nitro stout always had it on the bottom but when I started pouring the Maibock over the stout I didn't see any layer forming. I then reversed the order with what I had left and poured the stout over the Maibock. Well it turned out great! A little later I did some research into the archives and found that the Maibock may turn out to be the bottom layer for a new four layer combination. Maibock + Nitro Milk Stout + Blood & Honey + Guinness. I'll need to build up my beer inventory and try it out soon.
Thought I would share some recent black and tans recipes. They are all dark-on-bottom except for the Revolver Ale and Guinness combination (which I think I've shown before...). Two were made with the new Budweiser Oculto tequila flavored brew which layered pretty well.
Found another great bottom layer dark beer with Nitro Milk Stout from the Left Hand Brewing Co. Back in December we had tried their Milk Stout with the Hoegaarden Wit and it worked very well too. I guess we'll call all Milk Stout & Hoegaarden combinations a "Milky Hoe". Also found a great combination with the Nitro Milk Stout and Blook & Honey American Ale from Revolver Brewing. Check out the nice pictures below.
Bud Light may get a bad rap for beer taste but it does work really well as a light colored top layer beer. The pictures below show it on top of Abita Turbodog and Community Legion Russian Imperial Stout.
Here are some really nice layered beer pictures sent in from Bob H and Brent P. Check 'em out. If you have pictures of your own, please send them in.
Found some great 'Dark on Bottom' combinations over the past few weeks using Shiner Birthday Beer for the dark bottom layer. BOTTOM: Shiner Birthday Beer from Spoetzel Brewing
TOP: Amber Lager from Third Shift TOP: Devil's Backbone Beligan style Tripel from Real Ale Brewing TOP: 90 Shilling Ale from Odell Brewing |
