Dark on Bottom & Clear/Cloudy Black and Tans

6/29/2013

Once again the Archor Porter makes a great bottom layer for a black and tan.  Also tried the Goose Island 312 with a Saint Arnold Brown on the bottom for a nice clear 'n cloudy black and tan combination.  Click on the pictures to see larger images.

Great Father's Day Layering

Shock Top and Shiner Black and Tan beer
More left over beers in the fridge and what to do? ... Make some Black and Tan beers of course!

I tried a Shiner Black Lager over a Shock Top Belgian White and was pleasantly surprised with VERY distinct layering.  This is a combo to remember.

Goose Island and Anchor Black and Tan Beer
Found some Anchor Porter at the local grocery store.  Porters often work well for a bottom black and tan layer with their greater density and very dark color.  I combined it with a Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale that I hadn't tasted before.

The end result was interesting. The pair had very nice layering but as I let the drink sit (while grabbing the camera and taking pictures) some additional, more subtle layering seemed to come out.  See picture to the right.  I've never seen that before.

With the Archor Porter and Goose Island 312 success above, I tested using Shiner Black Lager on top of the 312 to see if a Porter-312-Black Lager triple would be possible. Disappointingly it wasn't as the 312 and Black Lager mixed easily.

However, this told me that the 312 should layer well over Shiner Kosmos... and it did!  The effect isn't as dramatic as a dark/light combination but I still like the clear/cloudy line.

Experimentation...

Had some 6-packs and family packs to experiment with over the weekend so a little trial & error were in order.  Had some successes...
  • The Shiner Black Lager over Hornsby's Cider turned out nice.  The "Guinness" labeling on the glass really makes the top layer dark beer stand out!
  • The Belhaven Scottish Ale over Hornsby's Hard Cider had some layering but kind of fuzzy and, with the Belhaven not being that much darker, the effect was a little underwhelming. Won't be having those two together again.
  • The Shock Top Belgian White over Shiner 101 turned out OK for a clear / cloudy layering effect but it was definitely a bit fuzzy.

More Newcastle Brown Ale Layering

Shock Top Black and Tan beer
Here are two Newcastle Brown Ale experiments that worked out well. One was with the Shock Top Belgian White on the bottom and the Brown Ale on the top. The cloudiness of the Shock Top makes a nice glow in the right light.

Also tried it with a bottle of  Hornsby's Hard Crisp Cider.  As you can see there is a nice fuzzy layer between the two beers.  Ciders make a great layered beers combinations. The cider's sweetness gets stronger with each sip.
