Just a reminder that the greatest green beer drinking day of the year is fast approaching. St. Patrick's day this year is Sunday, March 17. Here is some guidance on making a great Black and Green. The lower layer beer needs only 2 drops from a small bottle of green food dye. The green dye can be bought at a local grocery store (found it in the spice section, ~$2-$3). The effect is best when the lower beer is slightly cloudy. Enjoy!

Yes, Saint Patrick's day will soon be here. Sunday, March 17 in fact. Here are some pictures to set up some anticipation.
Below are some recent layered beers that I downloaded from my phone.
It has been a long time since I've posted. I have been busy this year though, making black and tans. All the pictures have been posted on Instagram. Below are some layered beer pictures that I hope will give you inspiration.
It has been a while since I've posted but I've collected a few nice customer pictures that were emailed to us. ![]() Rebecca told us: "I absolutely FREAKING LOVE this tool!! I could never create a perfect (descent for that matter!) black & tan, but now I’m making every color in the rainbow! Black & Red, Black & Blue & Black & Green even my own creation-the Black Badger! Black Badger = Guinness draught over Leinenkugel’s Wisconsin Red Pale Ale" ![]() Peter told us of his new creation: "The Bumblebee: Guinness on top of Surly Xtra-Citra Pale Ale. It's a Black & Yellow" Received a great email from Mark R.
"You’ll be glad to know it’s got a good amount of use already. My dad and I have been making Black and Tans and since you get two beers with each one you make, he’s been trying them with me. Turns out the bottled Guinness doesn’t work. So far my favorites have been blue moon and Guinness and shock top and Guinness. Left the tool with him because he’ll use it more than I will. It’s been fun!" Mark is right that bottled Guinness not working as well as the canned Guinness Draught. Combos with Blue Moon and Shock Top both work well and the cloudyness of the bottom layer presents nicely. Thanks for the feedback and the pictures Mark! We just received some great feedback from Don T in western Canada. He said "First attempt with Harp's Lager and Guinness resulted in a perfect pour. Thank you." That made my day. Don then shared two nice pictures to prove it. Thanks Don!
Both of these are almost guaranteed to work because of the density difference between the two layers. A great time with some new friends with what else? Three great layered beers.
Also found some other pictures on my camera roll ;) Even in the heat of summer the search for different layered beer combinations doesn't stop. Here are some nice combinations that helped to take the heat down a few degrees.
Randal just sent me a great picture. He wrote "Hello this is a black and tan i made using the perfect black and tan tool with Guinness Draught & Helltown Idle Hands DIPA. I call it "DRAUGHT in HELL" hope you use it on your site." This is a great combination with a very distinct layer separation line. Thanks Randal! UPDATE: Just received another picture from Randy with Guinness Draught & FatHeads Head Trip (tripple Belgian). He calls it "So an Irishman and 3 Belgians walk into a bar". Thanks again Randy!
Just a reminder that the greatest green beer drinking day is fast approaching. St. Patrick's day this year is Friday, March 17. Below is a practice Black and Green I just made. It worked out perfect! The IPA needed only 2 drops from a small bottle of green food dye I bought at the local grocery store (found it in the spice section, ~$2-$3).
