St. Patty's Day on March 17th (but celebrate on the 14th?)

OK. Saint Patrick's Day is only four days away. Unfortunately it is on the Tuesday and, given the COVID-19 thing going on, I think I'll be celebrating responsibly... at home.  I've been practicing my Black and Green combinations to get ready.  Two Real Ale Brewing Company beers worked out great with Guinness on top.

Check out last years March 3rd blog post for how to get the right green color.

How to Make a Black and Green (Its easier than you think)

Just a reminder that the greatest green beer drinking day of the year is fast approaching. St. Patrick's day this year is Sunday, March 17. Here is some guidance on making a great Black and Green.  The lower layer beer needs only 2 drops from a small bottle of green food dye. The green dye can be bought at a local grocery store (found it in the spice section, ~$2-$3). The effect is best when the lower beer is slightly cloudy. Enjoy!

St. Patrick's Day is Coming! Woohoo!

Yes, Saint Patrick's day will soon be here. Sunday, March 17 in fact. Here are some pictures to set up some anticipation.
  1. The first picture is from a great Irish Pub I found in Vancouver Canada back in January called Dublin Crossing. Less than 100 yards from the Marine Drive Skytrain station. What's not to love?
  2. Took this picture at my local Kroger grocery store. I hadn't seen bottle Guinness Draught in these white skinned bottles before.
  3. The three layer picture was from a customer who link to me on Instagram. The three layers are Guinness on top, Hofbrau Hefe in the middle and Spaten Optimator on the bottom. Love the picture! Full disclosure... This was done with a Guinness spoon and not my tool.
Below are some recent layered beers that I downloaded from my phone.

It has been a while since I've posted but I've collected a few nice customer pictures that were emailed to us.

Rebecca told us:
"I absolutely FREAKING LOVE this tool!! I could never create a perfect (descent for that matter!) black & tan, but now I’m making every color in the rainbow! Black & Red, Black & Blue & Black & Green even my own creation-the Black Badger!

Black Badger = Guinness draught over Leinenkugel’s Wisconsin Red Pale Ale"

Peter told us of his new creation:

Two Nice Combos

Received a great email from Mark R.

"You’ll be glad to know it’s got a good amount of use already. My dad and I have been making Black and Tans and since you get two beers with each one you make, he’s been trying them with me. Turns out the bottled Guinness doesn’t work. So far my favorites have been blue moon and Guinness and shock top and Guinness. Left the tool with him because he’ll use it more than I will. It’s been fun!"

Mark is right that bottled Guinness not working as well as the canned Guinness Draught. Combos with Blue Moon and Shock Top both work well and the cloudyness of the bottom layer presents nicely.

Thanks for the feedback and the pictures Mark!

Black & Tan Successful First Try

We just received some great feedback from Don T in western Canada. He said "First attempt with Harp's Lager and Guinness resulted in a perfect pour. Thank you."  That made my day. Don then shared two nice pictures to prove it.  Thanks Don!
  • LEFT: The classic Half and Half. Harp Lager under Guinness Draught in cans.
  • RIGHT: Guinness over Molsen Canadian apple cider

Both of these are almost guaranteed to work because of the density difference between the two layers.
